Writing Lab

Dear LCAD Students,

The LCAD Writing Lab is free, and it’s available to any LCAD student in search of an assist with anything writing-related in an LCAD course: higher order concerns—a paper, a short story, a script, an artist’s statement, a thesis statement, research integration, and other literary affairs; or lower-order concerns—grammar, diction, style, tone, mechanics, formatting, all that good stuff that makes language sizzle and pop. Students who leverage the LCAD Writing Lab improve their writing and editing skills, and this generally translates to improved grades in Liberal Arts coursework.

The LCAD Writing Lab opens this semester on Wednesday, September, 7th 2022, and we’re running it on Flipgrid so that you can drop in any time, and a Writing Lab staff member will get back to you within 24 hours.

Ideally, this is how a visit to the Writing Lab should go down:

  1. Using your LCAD email, join the LCAD Writing Lab Flipgrid: flip.com/02a74c8e
  2. Make sure you have the following:
    1. A copy of the assignment instructions, any previous drafts, instructor comments, or prewriting materials.
    2. Your most recent draft, something you can share electronically, preferably a PDF or something else that’s easy to open.
    3. Not necessary but encouraged: write down your specific questions or concerns. This way you don’t forget when you submit your Flipgrid video because forgetting is a bummer.
  3. Now that you’re prepared, submit a Flipgrid that details your needs. What are you struggling with? What questions do you have? How can we help you? Attach any pertinent files — the recent draft, the assignment prompt, instructor feedback, etc. Make sure permissions are adjusted so that the Writing Lab staff can open your files. Note: all submitted videos are private and will only be seen by Writing Lab staff.
  4. A Writing Lab staff member will respond within 24 hours. If you prefer to meet with an instructor live, that can be arranged. Say as much in your video, and a Writing Lab staff member will reach out to schedule something.
  5. When you’ve finished taking advantage of the LCAD Writing Lab, know that writing ability is a muscle, and you just got a little stronger.

We look forward to working with you. If you have any questions, you can direct them to Norm Leonard (nleonard@lcad.edu).

Sincerely,

The Writing Lab Staff
